Precision and Passion: Jonah Rossi’s ATDM Journey in Quality Control

Man with safety glasses.

Jonah Rossi’s path through the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program proves that passion and a strong educational foundation can launch a rewarding career. Now at Pegasus Steel, Rossi’s journey in quality control and metrology has been filled with opportunities and growth thanks to his training through ATDM.

Rossi was actively searching for a job when he was introduced to ATDM, a 16-week intensive program designed to prepare students for manufacturing careers that support the defense industrial base. After exposure to engineering and blueprints in high school, Rossi knew he wanted to work in a field where precision, measurement and problem-solving were key skills. Quality control (metrology) was a natural fit for his interests.

ATDM provided a fast-paced, hands-on learning experience. Rossi appreciated the program’s intensity, which was challenging yet highly effective. What stood out most was the unwavering support from instructors, particularly their patience in guiding students through accelerated coursework. Rossi recalled how his instructor ensured everyone stayed on track, always ready to offer extra help when needed.

“It was incredible how much we learned in such a short time. Our instructors were so patient and really helped everyone through,” Rossi said. “The program was absolutely incredible and to this day I’m still referencing back to my notebooks.”

One of the most valuable skills Rossi gained from the program was the ability to read blueprints and take precise measurements. In the world of quality control, measurements are rarely straightforward because parts rarely exist in a straight line. Rossi learned to interpret complex blueprints and use specialized measurement tools — skills that are now essential in his role at Pegasus Steel.

“Reading a tape measure and blueprints is one thing, but when you're working with 50- or 60-foot curved parts, it’s not a straightforward measurement,” Rossi said. “Knowing how to measure properly is something I am still using today, and it got me into the elevated position I’m at now.”

Rossi reflected on how those skills have shaped his career and his ability to contribute to his team. The foundation he built during his time at ATDM helped him secure a job in quality control, a position where he thrives in an environment that demands precision and accuracy every day.

Rossi’s advice to others in the ATDM is simple: “You’re going to learn so much.” He emphasized the importance of being open to new ways of thinking and absorbing as much knowledge as possible. He found that the program not only gave him the technical knowledge he needed but also encouraged him to see things from different perspectives, a skill that has proved invaluable in his current role.

“As long as you’re willing to learn the information, and are passionate about it, there are endless possibilities,” he added.

Jonah Rossi’s journey through the ATDM is a prime example of how starting a career can happen quickly with the right education and mindset. In 16 weeks, he went from being a job seeker to working in a fulfilling career. With dedication, passion and skills honed at ATDM, Rossi thrives in his field and is poised for continued success.
